It is one of the first times, possibly even the first time in my life
that I understood, like truly understood, on my own
That some writing is simply better than other writing
I could adjudicate which works I liked more than others and why
But this one was on my own, it just got me
The poem goes on from that opening line
To describe scenes visually represented in poetic detail
Praising each for being timeless, enduring, and emotive
After you read or hear the poem read loud
You feel like you can picture this artifact in your head
He gives you such a vivid explanation of the images
And the emotive response to them
That it's perhaps even better than having seen yourself
When somebody rhetorically describes a work of purely visual art
In language, it's called Ekphrasis
that I understood, like truly understood, on my own
That some writing is simply better than other writing
I could adjudicate which works I liked more than others and why
But this one was on my own, it just got me
The poem goes on from that opening line
To describe scenes visually represented in poetic detail
Praising each for being timeless, enduring, and emotive
After you read or hear the poem read loud
You feel like you can picture this artifact in your head
He gives you such a vivid explanation of the images
And the emotive response to them
That it's perhaps even better than having seen yourself
