The Butcher

Lock all your doors and shutter all the windows
The butcher will come and take you in your sleep
Indiscriminate nightmares hide in the shadows
When the kids are gone the mothers will weep

This is a tiny town we live in
And for the last damn near three hundred years
No crime has fallen on our ears but
Night is swallowing our children
And all the footprints left out in the snow
Won't tell us anywhere to go

The cold dead of winter will yield to the spring
All their bodies will be found under ice in the creek
The flesh wasn't whole and no stories were told
About the maniac who took our young from so long ago
