๐Ÿ“œ Lyrics

We've been playing all the songs off Tyler Rich's debut album
Which we're celebrating the release of now and this last song on the album
For people who are not familiar with you, I think they're gonna be very surprised
By the fact that you decided to put a cover of Michael Jackson's "Billy Jean" on your album
But I know there's a reason you did it
So I want you to talk about
Deciding to put this cover on your album and were you intimidated at all?

So I will start with saying that with "Billy Jean"
It is terrifying to release a cover of the king of anything
Especially a country rendition of the King of Pop
Now I grew up obsessed with Michael Jackson
I used to watch his music videos like they were movies when I was a little kid
And when I was learning how to play guitar
I would play Michael Jackson songs with my uncle who taught me how to play

And you know you flash forward to when I'm trying to get a record deal
So many artists in Nashville make their money playing cover songs on Broadway for tips
My version of that was I used to go to Vegas and Northern California
To these casinos and I would play in these casino wine lounges or these bar lounges
And play cover songs in the corner acoustic
And I had to figure out what is gonna get me tips
I need more tips to make these trips worth it
And so I started creating like my own renditions of these songs
And like Billy Jean is such a-

So many people know Billy Jean and so many people don't know what Billy Jean is about
You know Billy Jean is such a crazy story and it's in depth
And it felt like it needed a little bit more of like a bluesy
Almost Blake Shelton old red storyteller kind of vibe
And I just started chugging along like this bluesy country old school kind of vibe
All of a sudden my tips for Billy Jean at these lounges started skyrocketing
I'd get like hundred dollar bills for playing it sometimes

So now flash forward I get a record deal years later
And I'm sitting with Scott Borchetta and George Briner
And everybody at the label, we're brainstorming for radio tours
We're about to release the difference and I'm gonna go meet all these radio stations
And they're like if you can play one cover that's gonna make them turn their head
From everything they've heard every new artist play on this radio tour
What is it gonna be?
I was like why? I love my version of Michael Jackson Billy Jean
And they're like, uh, okay, can you play it?

You know, and I played it and they were just like, oh my God, yes, this is it
And then I got to release it on my EP, I got to do an actual studio version of it
And we did it exactly the way I wanted it to
I wanted it just a box drum, me, another guitar and my voice stripped, real raw
And the explosion over my cover of Billie Jean is nothing I ever imagined
It is like in the Midwest, my second most streamed song
I mean, at least that was a stat a little while ago
I don't know if leave a wild amount of past that now, but that's so crazy
Because, um, such a talent and a massive amount of work to rightfully cover a song like that

Well, I think you did it justice
I love this version of "Billie Jean" from Michael Jackson
But it's being sung by Tyler Rich
And it's the final song on his album, "Two Thousand Miles"
