๐ Lyrics
So, the first track on the album is called "Brutus"
And it was really important for me that "Girl in a Box"
Started where "Villains", my debut album, ended
Um, this song was actually originally written for "Villains"
But at the time, I just- I could not get the sound right
There was just something missing from the song
And I couldn't work out what it was at the time
So, I left it off my debut album
Um, it wasn't until a few years later
When I was revisiting some demos with my partner
And he suggested some changes to the beat structure
Uh, and suddenly everything began to fall into place
And it sounded perfect
It sounded the way that it was always supposed to sound
As for the lyrics, um, the lyrics for Brutus are based around
The idea of being betrayed by a friend
And I chose to metaphorically use
The tale of the assassination of Julius Caesar
One of the 23 people who ambushed Julius Caesar
Was his close friend, Marcus Junius Brutus
And this tale was later turned into a play by William Shakespeare
Who had Caesar say the words
"Et tu, Brute?" which basically means, "And you, Brutus?"
And he would say that in surprise towards Brutus being there
Just before he was killed
So the song is all about being blindsided by someone's betrayal
When you thought that you were close to them
And it was really important for me that "Girl in a Box"
