graduation day

At 5:45 I'll put the cap on
I'll be wearing the t shirt under the gown
I'll put on the daisy chain like Simone said
The hot pink dye will be fresh on my head
And Tommy will watch me walk across the stage
My mom will hear when they say my full name
And my dad will see me grab the diploma
While somebody's sister is checking their phone
And to some passers by, it's a day in the heat
Of too many strangers packed into the bleachers
Some will sit it out, its a tright ceremony
And some will take it all together, way too damn seriously
And I still don't quite know how i'm gonna feel
I think it'll be weeks before it's even real
That I don't have to wake up at 6:45
Until I've got my own kids to drive
And I'll miss the lunch ladies in room 204
And the locks on the gender neutral bathroom doors
And the ways people loved me without understanding
The way nobody ever did, worse than just laughing
And I'll miss the teachers that don't recognize me
And all of my peers that don't know my new name
And I'll miss the way that i used to see things
Cause i know that I'll never fully feel the same
