USS Dragonfly

Bursting in, Iris locks the door
looks at her pale reflection
a stranger on the floor
tears won't come along
Among the choking crowd she finds
a quiet place to lie
the dreams are coming on
Stone and ashes on the ground, the houses burn
a blinding scarlet light
a giant sun forecasts the end
all the children are insane
Back on earth
she wakes to judging eyes
she cries; that sympathy won't do
She's fighting to return
Stone ane ashes on the ground, she's going down
the running will stop soon
among the ruin we admire
the awful beauty in the doom
Ash and fire through the sky and the world goes dark
now Iris takes my hand
she looks at me for one last time
and softly whispers:
"Lovely figment of my mind
the light's gone out
the music's over now
a supernova is quite a sight
but it's the way a star dies"
