๐Ÿ“œ Lyrics

So, here we are. This is "The Songless Bird", which the immediate
Memory and, kind of, reaction I have, apart from the fact that it's
Like an old... meeting an old friend again, it's a great song to
Listen to, is remembering... or a kind of, sort of, reappreciating
Is probably the best way to put this, just how Rik managed to
Drum what, which is effectively guitar lines on the drums, '
Cause we're not in, sort of, straightforward, you know, 4/4 territory
Here. He's really... he's almost... it's not even drum beats he's
Playing in places. It's just, he's playing along with the riff
Rather, riffs in a, you know, spectacular fashion and really
Giving the song an extra, I don't know, an extra power and an
Extra dimension it certainly wouldn't have if you just braid straight
Through it. So, I mean, and I know how difficult it is because
We've had a few drummers in our time now and they don't all do that
So, you know, all credit to Rik for back then for drumming
Possibly without realising, some of the best stuff we've ever heard

The title "The Songless Bird" was directly inspired by part of the
Film "The Seventh Sign", where there's a room in heaven called "The
Guff" and it's filled with the souls of newborn babies, and each time
A soul descends from heaven to earth, the birds sing when they see
It. But there is only a finite number of souls, and when the final
One descends, the birds sing for the last time and then there is
Silence. "The Guff" is empty, there will be no more children born on
Planet Earth. And I thought it was quite a moving tale and I wanted
To use it somehow as part of "My Dying Bride", and it just inspired
Me to write the title "The Songless Bird". This song, the lyrics
Are nothing about that, but I just thought the title works well
Directly inspired from that film. So
Check it out, it's well worth a watch

One final point, which is very interesting, and I should really stop
Going "um" a lot. We had an electric violin specially built for
Martin for this record. It was built by a guy from the local town
Actually, from Dewsbury, and he made lutes and weird and wonderful
Stringed instruments in his garage. Really, really highly skilled
Craftsman. We had this electric violin specially built, it had gold
Strings, it was the absolute bee's knees. And I really don't know
To this day where we got the money from for something like that
But it was very special. We all were in awe when we saw it and when
We heard it, it was just amazing. To have something like that in our
Repertoire was remarkable and very proud of it. And I think Martin
Still has that violin today. If not, check eBay, it's possibly there

We've lived without suffering
But now...
