Carousel, Act II: Incidental (Entrance of Heavenly Friends)

[exterior. day. a door is opened. a man and a woman, both little
people, are sitting in a chair. the man, a black man with a beard
is sitting on the left and the woman, a white woman with a beard
is sitting on the right. the bearded man is talking to the woman
the woman is sitting in silence. the man turns to the bearded woman
and says, "get up." the bearded woman looks up, and says, "who are
you?" the man says, "shake yourself up. we gotta get going." the
bearded woman looks at the man, and says, "going? where?" the man
says, "never mind where. important thing is you can't stay here."
the bearded woman looks at the man, and says, "julie!" the man says
"she can't hear you." the bearded woman says, "who decided that?"
the man says, "you did. when you killed yourself." the bearded woman
looks at the man, and says, "i see." the man says, "so it's over."
the bearded woman says, "it isn't as simple as that. as long as there
is one person on earth who remembers you, it isn't over." the man
says, "what are you going to do to me?" the bearded woman says, "
we weren't going to do anything. we just came down to fetch you. to
take you up to the judge." the man says, "judge? i'm going before the
lord god himself?" the bearded woman says, "what have you ever done
that should come before him?" the man says, "so that's it! just like
jiggers said. no supreme court for little people, just police
magistrates." the bearded woman says, "who said anything about..."
the man says, "i tell you, if they kick me around up there like they
did down on earth, i'm going to do something about it. i'm dead
and i got nothing to lose. i'm going to stand up for my rights
i tell you. i'm going before the lord god himself. straight to the
top! you hear?" the bearded woman says, "simmer down, billy. simmer
down." the man says, "i ain't gonna simmer down. i'm going to the
top. i'm going to the top of the mountain. i'm going to the top of
the mountain, and i'm going to tell the lord god himself that i'm
not going to let him sleep on his hands. i'm going to tell him that
i'm going to stand up for my rights, i tell you. i'm going to stand
up for my rights, i tell you." the bearded woman says, "you don't
