Dambuilding

I went to where the stream flowed easy
And didn't rush too quickly
I picked up the biggest rocks I could lift and threw them
Dam building

And after just a little while
There were a hundred stones in the pile
I waded in and plugged up the cracks in the rocks with mud

When the water was barely trickling
It was time at last to do some digging
I shoveled out a shallow grave underneath that stream

Soon I saw the day was dawning
And shell-shocked by the morning
Damp and cold I gazed upon my work

Trying not to worry
I told myself I'd better hurry
And buried everything I could stand to lose

There was no time to be nervous
As I kicked at the dike with purpose
Soon the water rushed through my knees and over me
