This song started off uh as I think the most incomplete ideas
We probably have ever brought today from the studio
Which is again, it, people often asks how does it work
Do you do this stuff at home and take it to Dave Fridmann
And, and then he just sort of, you know, puts some finishing touches on it
How they work is all different ways, sometimes we justbarely
Have an idea, always a lot of enthusiasm and energy
But we barely have any idea 'bout what we wanna do, and sometimes something
Marvelous happens and take it to a whole new direction
And so, um, I think I had this riff uhm, the "do do dinlo" part
Uhm, uhm and then you play the great sort of funky understated beat
Uhm and then you, you, you came up with the idea, um, Steven, about, yeah
It calling it The W.A.N.D
Yeah I had a picture on my desktop
I dont know why just had a picture of, like, a wand with
Some sparkly sprinkly things around, and I thought that would be cool theme
For like a psychedelic, like a prog rock band or something (sure yeah)
Called the wand will be name of the band (Oh I see, right)
And then it sort of like, it just went from there over a song called the wand
It seemed a little more beautiful (yeah, yeah)
And I think at first we had a line like
You got the power waving you on in the air
And that was all we had and so, um
And I think we did it for couple of months and it probably just
Stayed that way
And then we little by little changed into more of a song
But yeah againit shows you the, sometimes that's a sort of freedom of working with
Someone like Dave Fridmann is you don't- I have to be so prepared
Sometimes not being prepared lets you breathe and discover some ideas
Along the way and I think it's one of the craziest, most unexpected, um, strangest tracks
I think we ever recorded
Yeah, I think this song, this to me is when it really started to seem like we were actually
Working on the record, I mean 'cause we recorded Mr. Ambulance Driver but that was done in June of 2004
(Right, yeah) and we got bogged down with all these side projects we had to do, we did the bohemian rapsody cover
We did a song with Sparklehorse for the David Johnston tribute, we did the Thievery Corporation track
And we actually did this it felt like ok, now we're working on this new record
And I think it really energizes to move forward from there
Yeah, yeah, suddenly we discovered something new radical and fun and different
And I don't mean bogged down like "ugh we have to work on some other things", it's just you

You move away from finding a new direction, because
You are just sorta working on other things, so
