The Lighthouse Burden

I saw the lighthouse on fire
and I still ran the ship ashore
I never heeded any warning
and I don't count the seventh time

I am the watcher in the tower
I hope the failure isn't mine
they say I've scared them off their bearings
too much light confuses the eye

come and keep us through the seas uncertain
lead us safely back to shore
come and heal us of the lighthouse burden
what we saw we could not know

I felt the danger in my cold bones
but I had never seen the beast
I thought I knew these wicked waters
master of the treacherous sea

I am a guide through the dark places
from distant stars to crushing rock
follow my light upon the skyline
don't let your mind confuse the eye

come and keep us through the seas uncertain
lead us safely back to shore
come and free us from the lighthouse burden
through the darkness we must go
