'Counting The Beat' by Kiwi band The Swingers was the best selling single downunder in 1981. Entering the Top 100 in February of that year, the song spent 6 months in the chart; 14 weeks in the Top 10 alone and 3 weeks at the very top. The Swingers were only together for a few years, and in their homeland they scored 4 hits, but across the ditch - 'Counting The Beat' was their only success. The follow up 'It Ain't What You Dance, It's The Way You Dance It' stalled just outside the Top 40. The band re-entered my radius the following year when the movie soundtrack 'Starstruck' used an earlier recording by the group: 'One Good Reason' also known as 'Gimme Love' and the title track as well; both excellent songs. Further releases 'One Track Mind' and 'Punch & Judy' whilst enjoyable and catchy pop, did not find an audience in Oz, rendering The Swingers a one hit wonder in Australia. But what a hit! 40 years on, 'Counting The Beat' is still played and used in advertising. Here, I have re-edited the 'Countdown' clip with an extended edit of the song. Enjoy!
