New York Rangers

Description:
The day before Game 6 at the Meadowlands, Mark Messier made “The Guarantee” that the Rangers would win and force a Game 7. The Devils, however, took a 2-0 lead in the first period and dominated the game for the first 40 minutes. Mike Richter’s stellar play in the second period prevented New Jersey from taking a three-goal lead, and Alexei Kovalev scored a goal late in the second period to cut the Rangers’ deficit in half.

In the third period, Messier delivered the signature performance of his career. He scored the game-tying goal with a backhand shot at 2:48, the go-ahead (and eventual game-winning) goal by burying a rebound chance at 12:12, and the clinching goal to complete the hat trick by firing a shot the length of the ice into an empty net at 18:15.

The Rangers were heading back to The Garden for Game 7.
