There are a lot of official versions of "The Damage You've Done" that have surfaced throughout Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' career. While the first to surface was on the studio album 'Let Me Up (I've Had Enough)' (1987), the 'Playback' boxset from 1995 contained a "Country Version" of the song, and the posthumous 'An American Treasure' set from 2018 released a studio version without the extra, glossy 1980s production and extra drum machines.
The song was played live less than 10 times. The first performance has circulated among bootleggers from a 1989 radio broadcast that collected various songs from the 'Strange Behaviour' tour. The song was then played a few times on the European leg of their 1992 'Touring the Great Wide Open' tour. It wouldn't be played again until twenty years later (!): on May 31, 2012 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The version here is from that show. Enjoy!
