The pressure campaign by the Trump administration to arrest and deport as many undocumented immigrants as possible appears to be in full swing, with a focus on so-called sanctuary cities and states.
In New York, the Department of Homeland Security shared photos and stories associated with a mission they named “Operation Rotten Apple.”
According to the Department of Homeland Security, "The operation, which took place from July 27 to August 29, resulted in the arrests of 2,197 illegal aliens across the state of New York, including murderers, rapists, pedophiles, drug traffickers, and violent assailants."
During a news conference Tuesday, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said criminals were the target, but others were arrested as well.
“When you choose to take the shortcut, you have made a decision, a conscious decision, to enter this country illegally and break our nation’s laws. It is our job at DHS and ICE to enforce our nation’s laws. We don’t pick and choose them; we'll simply enforce them.”
In an interview with Fox News Wednesday, White House Border Czar Tom Homan slammed New York City and state officials for not cooperating in the effort.
"I told Governor Hochul, if you lock us out of the jails now we have to go to the streets and find the bad guy and when we find the bad guy or in the process of finding the bad guy we're going to find others....others that may not be a public safety threat but are in the country illegally."
New York Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul said multiple times that she believes the statement is "absolutely wrong, " including during a news conference Tuesday.
If there are cases where there are individuals who are in this country undocumented who are involved in crimes, we always have and always will make sure that we cooperate under those circumstances.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani also responded to the arrests.
What we are seeing, however, from ICE is an attempt to criminalize the very fact of being an immigrant. And we are seeing a terrorizing of immigrants across our city and frankly across our nation that has left so many, regardless of their status, in deep fear about even leaving their home," Mamdani said.
It’s all part of a plan to dramatically increase the number of people in this country overall detained and deported, immigration officials reportedly given quotas to meet that they are now approaching.
After monthly arrests under former President Joe Biden hovered below 20,000, the numbers have climbed, setting a new record in July with nearly 50,000, according to the Deportation Data Project.
Deportation numbers are on the rise as well, also setting a record in July, reaching nearly 34,000.
It averages out to about 1,500 arrests and 1,100 removals each and every day.
The immigration crackdown now includes a former supporter of it and President Donald Trump, who is changing his tune after he was deported this week.
"It was physically degrading. It was it was frightening," said British commentator Milo Yiannopoulis, "I don't think I've ever been frightened like that before."
