US President Donald Trump was greeted by loud boos from sections of the crowd before the FIFA World Cup trophy presentation on Sunday, before later being asked to step aside as Spain celebrated their triumph over Argentina.
Trump walked onto the field alongside FIFA president Gianni Infantino at the New York New Jersey Stadium for the post-match ceremony after Spain defeated defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time. Infantino had announced before the presentation that Trump would hand the World Cup trophy to the winning captain.

Trump, who watched Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina next to Infantino in a suite at MetLife Stadium, waved to the crowd as he walked on to the field, but as cameras cut to him, boos and whistles began to drown out the music filling the stadium. They were audible on the television broadcast and even more so in the stadium.
