ABOUT THE COLLABORATION
Raghu and I were introduced by our mutual friend, and my longtime collaborator, Abigail Washburn. When she found out I was headed to Bengaluru, she felt we had to meet. Abby was right. We clicked from the beginning.

One morning in Raghu's writing room, we started talking about my Otherlands project and what we might play together. I was excited when he proposed trying something new for himself. Raghu went to get a small blue book of poetry.
He is well known for writing his own songs, but in the background, he has been exploring setting music to one of his favorite poets, Dr. Da. Ra. Bendre. There was one poem called Baaro Saadhanakerige that he had previously performed on rare occasion, but never recorded. When he told me about the meaning of the words — a traveling song of nostalgia and longing, of leaving your home to search for what you think may be better, only to return to your home and find that it has been the true place for you — I knew this was the song to record. It resonated in a big way with me on these travels since I'm on long journey home.
Sitting in the studio a couple of days later, we locked quickly and easily. After a bit of running the melody, solidifying the chords, and sketching a rough arrangement, we were ready to hit record. And hit it we did...one take, and done. The energy was right. I could feel that Raghu was happy to be singing. And for a brief moment, I tapped into a flow that channeled my recent surroundings and inspiration in India.
One week later, Raghu and I relived our song with an energetic performance on the TV show Haadu Karnataka, a talent show featuring singers from around the state of Karnataka.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
OTHERLANDS: A Global Music Exploration follows GRAMMY-nominated 5-string American fiddler Casey Driessen as he travels with his family to various countries across the globe to meet with local acoustic-based musicians with roots in their own traditions. Musical exchanges and travels are documented via audio, video and photography elements with collected materials released over the course of the project via his website and social media outlets and official musical releases likely to come at the end of travels.
OTHERLANDS is an independently designed and produced project that is self-contained with a small collection of audio and video equipment. All engineering and recording, including any post-production, can be set up, operated, and completed by Casey wherever on the globe he happens to be.
