When I uploaded this concert performance of Vangelis’ Chariots of Fire in 2021, I never imagined that so many people would eventually watch it. The number of views — and especially the comments — showed me just how deeply his music still lives in people around the world.
When he passed away, I was surprised by how little attention his death seemed to receive here in Hungary. My own impression was that only a few lines were devoted to him in the news, and I did not feel there was the kind of wider tribute one might expect for an artist whose music had helped make films, stories and entire moments in cinema history unforgettable.
For that reason, I would especially like to thank everyone who has written a personal memory, a thoughtful comment or a few words of respect beneath this video. In many ways, those messages say more about what Vangelis left behind than any formal obituary ever could.
For anyone who knows only his music, I strongly recommend listening to some of his longer interviews as well. He was not only an extraordinary composer, but also a deeply thoughtful and wise man. The way he spoke about music, creativity, nature and humanity revealed an understanding that went far beyond technique.
There are fewer and fewer composers among us who understand not only how music is created, but also have a sense of where music itself comes from.
Vangelis understood that.
And perhaps that is why his music remains with us, even though he no longer is.
Amikor 2021-ben feltöltöttem ezt a felvételt Vangelis Chariots of Fire című művének koncertelőadásáról, nem gondoltam volna, hogy ennyi emberhez eljut majd. A megtekintések és különösen a hozzászólások azonban megmutatták, milyen sok ember számára jelentett és jelent ma is valamit az a különleges zenei világ, amelyet létrehozott.
Halálának napján különösen meglepett, milyen kevés figyelmet kapott itthon. Az én emlékeim szerint a magyar híradásokban alig néhány mondat jutott neki, és nem igazán éreztem azt a méltó megemlékezést, amelyet egy olyan alkotó érdemelt volna, akinek zenéje világszerte filmeket, történeteket és generációk emlékeit tette maradandóvá.
Ezért külön szeretném megköszönni mindenkinek, aki a videó alatt személyes emlékkel, gondolattal vagy néhány tiszteletteljes mondattal méltatta őt. Ezek a hozzászólások talán többet mondanak arról, mit hagyott maga után, mint bármilyen hivatalos nekrológ.
Aki csak a zenéit ismeri, annak különösen ajánlom, hogy hallgasson meg vele készült hosszabb interjúkat is. Nem csupán kivételes zeneszerző volt, hanem rendkívül gondolkodó, bölcs ember. Úgy beszélt zenéről, alkotásról, természetről és az ember helyéről a világban, ahogyan nagyon kevesen.
Ma egyre kevesebb olyan zeneszerző maradt közöttünk, aki nemcsak azt érti, hogyan kell zenét létrehozni, hanem azt is érzi, honnan érkezik maga a zene.
Vangelis ezt tudta.
És talán ezért marad velünk a zenéje akkor is, amikor már ő nincs közöttünk.
