Description:
about the playwright
French playwright Moliere's real name is John Baptiste Poquelin. He is an esteemed playwright and actor in Western literature. Among the famous plays written by Moliere are 'The Misanthrope', The School for Wives, Tartuffe, The Miser, The Imaginary Invalid, and The Bourgeois Gentleman.
He was born in a wealthy family. He worked as a nomadic artist for thirteen years of his life. He is famous for the fusion of Commedia Dellarte and French Comedy in his works. Despite of the endless praise from the court and Parisians, he was criticized by the so called moralists and Catholic Church.
Moliere was born in 1622 in a wealthy family in Paris. He lost his mother at the age of ten and he was not close to his father. At the age of 21, he decided to dedicate his life to theatre by denouncing his prosperous life. He opened Illustre theatre in association with actress Madeleine Bejart.
Moliere wrote Tartuffe in 1664. It was premiered at Versailles Fetes theatre in the same year. King Louis XIV has prohibited it's staging owing to its content pertaining to religious issues. Church's fathers prohibited for the cremation of his body. But because of the well-intention of the King, his funeral was carried out in traditional way.

I had planned on becoming an artist since long before. But the right moments hadn't come, or say I couldn't do it. Today the idea is becoming real. If my friends at Shilpee theatre and brother Ghimire Yubaraj hadn't pushed me forward, it would not have been possible even today. My deep gratitude goes to all of my friends.
It has already been fifteen years since my journey into the theatre started. I ran, walked and crawled in this period of time. I directed many forum theatre plays and street plays, and acted in two dozens plays in a real theatre. I also worked as an assistant director in some plays including Death of the Happiness written by Birendra Hamal, Bari lai and Apple Cart written by Ghimire Yubaraj. But Tartuffe is the only play that is fully directed by me. Ten years have passed since the establishment of Shilpee. As a founding member, I feel happy for the opportunity to direct this play. I feel that this has increased both energy and encouragement in me.
After two years long formal theatrical study at Commedia School in Denmark, I faced mental pressure to work in this kind of play. The play, translated by Megharaj sir, caught my interest instantly. We discussed in great length to transform the play that is suitable in Nepali context. We retransformed it and brought it to its present state. There might be its flaws and weaknesses. I always welcome your feedback. I believe that creative criticism helps the artist.
I dedicate this play as guru dakshina to Guru Birendra Hamal, who paved my way towards the journey into the theatre, and to Guru Ole Breke, who helped me stand in my own feet. "My plan is to work in consonance with the plan of god. May god bless everything." I say this in the words of the play.
