Raucous and playful, Pretty Eyed Baby puts you in the room with Benack and his band. It’s a hat tip to the trumpeter-vocalist-composer’s many years hosting jam sessions in clubs around New York, including his current post Wednesdays 10pm at Smalls in the West Village. Benack makes Pretty Eyed Baby the quintessential last tune of the night, when the band reassembles on stage, their ties loose and collars unbuttoned, for one final hit.
“It really is capturing that energy of having fun at a jam session,” says Benack, who enjoys himself as much as anyone. He shares a rollicking, back and forth scat with Michael Stephenson, and you can hear him egging on Emmet Cohen (piano) and Russell Hall (bass), both of whom deliver knockout solos.
Pretty Eyed Baby continues the rollout for Benack’s LP “Third Time’s The Charm,” which builds on the signature style of his previous releases — using his fluency in a diverse set of genres to full effect, crafting a studio album with a live show feel.
“This record is the maturation, the culmination of my journey to this point,” shares Benack, “and of everything I’ve been developing artistically, across my playing, singing, and writing. It perfects the formula I’ve crafted on my previous two albums. I tried to program it as if I was doing a two set concert. It has that New York kind of energy, being in the room at midnight at Smalls, or if you went to see me at Dizzy’s. If you’re seeing a live show, you love that zig zag and energy thrust of different styles. That’s how you put on a dynamic show. I wanted the album to reflect that.”
