This is your warning drivers, race above the yellow line. Ever since its inception in 2001, the yellow line rule has led to questionable calls and controversies. It was put in place to limit the mayhem at Daytona and Talladega yet over the past decade mayhem has ensued with three drivers flying into the catch fence while racing back to the checkered flag (Edwards 2009; Larson 2013; Dillon 2015). It is becoming increasingly hard to argue that the yellow line rule is taming the mayhem at the end of these superspeedway races. Before the 2020 season, should NASCAR rewrite the contentious yellow line rule?
