The New England Patriots may be surpassing expectations with a 7-2 record and sitting atop the AFC East but that hasn’t stopped quarterback Drake Maye giving himself some home truths this week.

Maye was hugely critical of his own performance in the 24-23 win over the Atlanta Falcons in Week 9.

“I’ve got to play better for this team down the road,” Maye said after finishing 19-of-29 for 259 yards, with two touchdowns, one interception and one lost fumble. “It’s tough in a game you win; you can feel in that locker room that these guys know we can play better.

“[I’m] getting in a bad habit of trying to break tackles on guys that I don’t have a great chance of breaking a tackle on.”

The Buccaneers come into the clash off a bye week which has allowed quarterback Baker Mayfield to overcome knee and oblique injuries.

“It definitely helps getting rest,” he told the Bucs’ official website. “[I was] still moving my body around a little bit, not letting yourself get too sore, but then also just the non-contact definitely helps.”

Mayfield’s completion percentage through the first six games was 66.2% before falling to 58.1% over the past two outings.

“It is not really an excuse, you just [have] to get used to it, figure it out and go from there,” said Mayfield of the oblique injury in particular. “Some throws, I did not have my feet perfect, they were not going to be accurate. Normally, I can make up for it with how I change my arm angle and stuff like that. Some of it was different, but you just have to live and learn.”
